Blandfordia grandiflora, the Christmas Bells is a slow growing, clumping, grass like perennial herb that grows in the damp, sandy coastal soils between Sydney in NSW and Fraser Island in Queensland. It has narrow, rigid, strap-like leaves about 70cm long and produces long thin stems about 80-120cm high that carry up to 10 pendulous, bell-shaped bright red flowers with golden yellow tips. Long narrow capsules develop from the flowers containing small, brown velvety seeds. Flowering occurs from November to March with a peak in mid-December, hence its common name Christmas Bells.

The large, stunning flowers are one of the most popular east-coast wildflowers. They have a glossy, waxy texture which enhances their colour, can last as cut flowers for up to a week and are now being grown commercially. They attract nectar feeding birds, particularly honeyeaters, plus bees, butterflies and insects. The plants have fleshy underground corms which enables them to survive, re-sprout and flourish after fires.

Due to their popularity, they have been over-picked or damaged in the wild and some localised species extinction has occurred, so they are now considered vulnerable and are protected by law. In Australia they have become a symbol of the arrival of the holiday season, Christmas, joy, merriment and the spirit of celebration.

Care instructions: do not wear swimming or bathing.
